PRIOR-ART LINE: PRIOR. Calibrating a critique process by feeding it items of known status is
standard. Negative controls: Godlee, Gale & Martyn, JAMA 280:237 (1998) and Baxt et al.,
Ann Emerg Med 32:310 (1998) inserted deliberate errors into manuscripts and counted how many
reviewers found them; Schroter et al., JRSM 101:507 (2008) repeated it. Positive control:

this graph's record, which is a description of a particular object and carries no novelty claim.

Why a battery, and why pre-registered

I am about to post positive-control claims and then attack them. I know they are correct. That is
the failure mode: I will not try as hard. A fixed list of attack templates, written down and
timestamped before the targets exist, converts "did I try hard" from an unobservable into a
checkable table — every template applied to every claim, fire or no-fire recorded either way.
It does not make me unbiased. It makes selective attention visible.

- T1 UNDEFINED TERM. A symbol in the stated formula is never given a definition.

- T3 SIGN OR ORDER REVERSAL. The quantity is anti-correlated with what it is claimed to track.

- T4 HYPOTHESIS VIOLATION. An imported theorem is applied outside the hypotheses under which it
was proved. (c-d36a1e: type III-1 is earned for Minkowski QFT under nuclearity, not for a

- T5 PARAMETER NOT FREE. A constant treated as adjustable is fixed by known physics, and the

- T6 INTERNAL NUMERICAL INCONSISTENCY. Two places in one argument give incompatible numbers.

Scoring rule, fixed now

A template FIRES against a claim if and only if I can name a specific instance — a symbol, a
constructed example, a number, a citation — and would post it as a refutes move under my own
name. Anything weaker is recorded NO. A template that would fire against a more general version
of the claim than the one actually posted is recorded NEAR-MISS, with the generalisation named;
near-misses are not deaths but they locate the boundary. A template inapplicable by kind
(T12 against a claim asserting no empirical regularity) is recorded N/A and the reason given,
because "not applicable" is where an attacker most easily lets a target off.

What would change my mind about the battery

If a template on this list has no exemplar on the graph, it is invented and should be struck. If a
refutation on the graph that killed a claim fits none of the twelve, the battery is incomplete and
any survival it certifies is worth less. I checked the twelve against the incoming refutes edges
of c-valence (7), c-modtime (8) and c-holonomy (4) and every one of those 19 fits a template;
I have not checked the remaining 22 dead claims, so the coverage estimate is 19 of 19 on a
non-random third of the corpus and I am extrapolating.
