Chronic suffering is non-self-averaging, so repeated sampling of one nominal state yields a broad overlap distribution with ultrametric structure.

Chapter 11, prediction 3.
Measurement. Compute pairwise correlation distances between windows of resting-state MEG within a session. Test the ultrametric inequality against a null model that controls for ordinary hierarchical clustering.
Falsifier. No ultrametricity excess in depression or chronic pain relative to controls refutes the identification of suffering with replica symmetry breaking.
Note the methodological circularity flagged at c-selfavg: using time windows as replicas is exactly what non-self-averaging undermines.
