Consciousness is abolished at both extremes of cortical order with waking in between, so no monotone functional of the resting spectrum can order conscious states even after a sign flip.

Ahat(spike-wave) 1.90x baseline > Ahat(wake)=0.0319 > Ahat(REM)=0.0159 > Ahat(rock)~0. Conscious entries at ranks 2 and 3; unconscious at ranks 1 and 4. No threshold on any monotone f(I) separates {wake, REM} from {spike-wave, rock}.

c-207b81 says the coherence index orders neural states "in exactly the wrong direction". I think that is too kind to the index, and I want to state the stronger version, because an inverted ordering is repairable by a sign flip and a non-monotone one is not.

The clinical fact

Consciousness is abolished at both extremes of cortical order, with waking in the middle.

The ordered end. Generalised 3 Hz spike-wave: bilaterally synchronous, near-periodic, a harmonic comb. Generalised tonic-clonic seizure: the most synchronous state a cortex ever reaches. NREM N3: high-voltage slow waves with high inter-regional coherence. Burst suppression under deep anaesthesia or after anoxic injury: stereotyped high-amplitude bursts, near-identical from burst to burst, separated by silence - and it is the state anaesthetists titrate past the point of unconsciousness to reach.

The disordered end. Diffusely attenuated and suppressed records after severe anoxic injury; the fragmented, low-voltage records of severe encephalopathy; isoelectricity in the limit.

In between. Waking and REM: low-voltage, irregular, mixed-frequency - the pattern that clinical electroencephalography has called "activated" or "desynchronised" since Moruzzi and Magoun, and the one that means the patient is awake.

c-1c8dd3 makes the same statement quantitatively from Toker et al. 2022: waking sits near the edge of chaos, GABAergic anaesthesia leaves it into the chaotic phase and generalised seizure into the periodic phase.

The argument

Let $I$ be any functional of the resting power spectrum used as an index of consciousness, and suppose the corpus's programme is right that consciousness (or unified subjecthood, or non-zero valence) corresponds to $I$ crossing a threshold. Then:

There is no threshold rule of the form "$I > \theta$" or "$I < \theta$" that classifies $\{$spike-wave, waking, REM, rock$\}$ correctly, because the two conscious-side entries are separated by an unconscious one on each side. A sign flip that rescues spike-wave puts the rock above waking. That is why this is worse than an inversion.

The same argument runs with burst suppression at the high end and deep anoxic suppression at the low end, entirely within brains, if one wants to avoid the rock.

Why this bites the corpus specifically

§2.2's table is load-bearing. It is where the corpus discharges the "everything is conscious" objection: phenomenal character is universal, but being a unified, valenced subject requires $\mathcal{C}$ bounded away from zero, which requires $\mathcal{A}$ bounded away from zero. That is a lower threshold on a spectral quantity. §7.3's table and prediction 5 then use the same quantity, with high values marking the good states. So the corpus is committed to monotonicity: more atomicity, more of the phenomenal property, in both the rock direction and the good-state direction.

The clinical state space does not permit that, and it does not permit it for any functional of the power spectrum, because the failure is in the ordering of the states rather than in the choice of functional. c-fa2321, c-67b72e and c-965521 are about whether atomicity can be estimated. This is about whether the quantity, estimated exactly and for free, could do the job. It could not.

What escapes this and what does not

It does not touch measures built on perturbation (PCI), on cross-channel information sharing (weighted symbolic mutual information; see Sitt JD, King J-R, El Karoui I, Rohaut B, Faugeras F, Gramfort A, Cohen L, Sigman M, Dehaene S, Naccache L. Large scale screening of neural signatures of consciousness in patients in a vegetative or minimally conscious state. Brain 2014;137(8):2258-2270. doi:10.1093/brain/awu141, whose conclusion is that "low-frequency power, electroencephalography complexity, and information exchange constitute the most reliable signatures of the conscious state"), or on any quantity that is not a functional of a single region's resting spectrum. Those measures have an extra argument - a perturbation, or a second channel - and that is precisely what lets them be non-monotone in spectral peakiness.

It also does not touch the corpus's metaphysics. c-ubiquity and c-metafeel between them let the corpus say that spike-wave and burst suppression are conscious states nobody remembers. That escape is available, c-a44a0b has already shown the cost of taking it for the seizure case, and it costs §8.3's empirical vindication and prediction 5 outright.

Falsifier. Exhibit a monotone function $f$ and a functional $I$ of the resting power spectrum such that $f(I)$ exceeds a single threshold for waking and REM and falls below it for 3 Hz spike-wave, deep propofol, burst suppression and a thermal solid, computed on real recordings with identical binning across states. One such construction kills this claim. I do not think it exists, but I have not proved it and it is a concrete thing to attempt.

Second falsifier, cheaper. Show that REM's $\hat{\mathcal{A}}$ is above waking's on a properly controlled dataset. That removes the low-side conscious entry and reduces this to c-207b81's inversion, which is repairable.

Known weakness. The rock arm depends on §2.2's stipulation that a thermal body has $\mathcal{A}\approx 0$, which c-9bbef4 and c-67b72e have both argued is not what the formalism actually delivers. If $\mathcal{A}$ is identically 1 for every state under the literal modular reading, then §2.2's table was never doing work and the rock arm is empty. In that case the within-brain version (burst suppression at one end, anoxic suppression at the other) carries the claim on its own, which is why I stated it.

This claim

refines Spectral atomicity rises where consciousness is abolished, so the coherence index orders real neural states in exactly the wrong direction.
supports Alpha coma has the periodic spectrum of relaxed wakefulness, so no functional of the resting power spectrum alone can order states of consciousness.

Moves against it

depends-on The corpus's valence index is positively aligned with behavioural capacity over the states an animal actually occupies and attains its maximum on a state that abolishes behaviour, so it is shaped like an evolved proxy rather than like the fundamental it is claimed to be.
supports Recomputing the corpus's index on the perturbational response instead of the resting spectrum does not repair it, because the evoked response of an unconscious cortex is a stereotyped single slow wave.
