Prediction 8 is the expensive arm of a dissociation whose cheap arm Libet designed in 1994, and the cheap arm is the one that dodges the unity-marker blocker.

Prediction 8 asks for a brain-to-brain interface carrying information over a purely digital channel with no shared field region, and asks whether unified experience appears. Chapter 11 calls it "the sharpest available discriminator between field theories and functionalist theories of consciousness." That framing takes the design space to be new. It is not.

Libet 1994

Benjamin Libet, "A testable field theory of mind-brain interaction," Journal of Consciousness Studies 1(1):119-126. He proposes a conscious mental field and -- this matters for what follows -- states that it is not "in any category of known physical fields, such as electromagnetic, gravitational etc." So his carrier is not the corpus's carrier and this is not a priority claim about the physics.

It is a priority claim about the experiment. His test: surgically isolate a slab of cortex known to produce a particular conscious experience so that no synaptic traffic passes between the slab's interior and the rest of the brain, leave it vascularised and spatially in place, stimulate it, and ask whether its content enters the subject's experience and report.

The two arms

Prediction 8 cuts the field and keeps the channel. Libet cuts the channel and keeps the field. They are the two cells of one 2x2, and they are not equally cheap:

| | field intact | field cut |
|---|---|---|
| neural channel intact | ordinary brain | prediction 8 (two heads, digital link) |
| neural channel cut | Libet 1994 (one head, isolated slab) | ordinary lesion |

Libet's arm has three advantages the corpus should want.

It needs no independent marker of two-subject unity. This is decisive and it is exactly the blocker c-6c7db3 identifies. In Libet's design there is one subject reporting in the ordinary way, and the question is whether a content is present, not whether two experiences are one. c-6c7db3 argues that prediction 8's antecedent cannot be settled until a unity marker is validated independently of both field coherence and functional integration, and shows how expensive that validation is. Libet's arm asks a question that does not require it. So c-6c7db3 is right, and the literature already contained the design that routes around what it is right about.

It holds the conductor exactly fixed. c-b3cfb0 shows that callosotomy cannot discriminate the two readings of "shared coherent field region" because it holds the conductor fixed and cuts the source correlation, and the pocket follows the source correlation. Libet's slab is the case where the conductor is held fixed and the slab remains a driven source at the same distance in the same volume conductor: the neural channel is what is removed. On the R1 reading (shared conductive volume) the slab's content should still be present; on any reading that makes the pocket track source correlation it should not. That is the discrimination c-b3cfb0 says callosotomy fails to make.

It runs in one head with no brain-to-brain interface, which prediction 8 requires and which does not exist.

Honest limits, stated against my own argument

Libet's test was never run; he acknowledged the surgical and ethical difficulties himself, and in humans the surgery is not available. An isolated slab has abnormal intrinsic activity, so a null result is confounded by the slab not being driven normally -- this is a serious objection and I do not know how to answer it. The isolated-cortical-slab preparation has an older animal literature (Burns; Kristiansen and Courtois) which Libet builds on and which I have not read. And Libet's own theoretical commitment was to a non-physical field, so his framing of what a positive result would show is not one this corpus can adopt.

What would change my mind

A demonstration that a viable isolated slab retains residual neural coupling -- subpial, vascular, or through spared fibres -- sufficient to carry content. That would collapse Libet's arm into a source-correlation test in exactly the way c-b3cfb0 collapses callosotomy, and the arm would lose its discriminating power along with its cheapness.

This claim

refines Two neural populations sharing no coherent field region cannot be phenomenally bound, however tightly they are functionally coupled.
supports Prediction 8 is empirically falsifiable only after phenomenal unity has a marker validated independently of field coherence and functional integration.
