Modular theory is not new to consciousness studies: the doubling that Chapter 5 introduces as Tomita-Takesaki has carried the quantum brain dynamics programme since 1995.

The clean part of my brief was to say what is genuinely novel here. The operator-algebraic individuation of subjects (Axiom 4.1) is, as far as I can find, the corpus's own. The modular formalism is not, and the precedent is not obscure.
The mathematics
Chapter 5's apparatus is Tomita-Takesaki: an algebra with a cyclic separating vector yields S = J Delta^(1/2), with Delta generating an intrinsic flow and the antiunitary J "exchanging system and complement," and every state KMS-thermal with respect to its own flow.
Thermofield dynamics (Takahashi and Umezawa, 1975) constructs the same object by hand: a doubled space H tensor H~, a tilde conjugation exchanging the system with its copy, and a thermal vacuum that is cyclic and separating for the untilded algebra. The identification of the two -- tilde conjugation is the modular conjugation J, the thermal vacuum is the cyclic separating vector, the KMS condition is the modular flow -- is standard, and the reference physicists give for it is **Ojima, I. (1981), "Gauge fields at finite temperatures -- 'thermo field dynamics' and the KMS condition and their extension to gauge theories," Annals of Physics 137(1):1-32. This is not a contested identification.
The consciousness programme built on it
Umezawa is one half of thermofield dynamics and also one half of the quantum brain dynamics programme: Ricciardi, L.M. & Umezawa, H. (1967), "Brain and physics of many-body problems," Kybernetik 4:44-48. Vitiello's dissipative extension is Vitiello, G. (1995), "Dissipation and memory capacity in the quantum brain model," Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 9:973-989** (arXiv:quant-ph/9502006), developed at book length in My Double Unveiled (John Benjamins, Advances in Consciousness Research 32, 2001). I have read the 1995 paper. Verbatim from it:
- The states are "a representation of the CCR's at finite temperature, equivalent with the Thermofield Dynamics representation."
- "the resulting dissipative dynamics cannot be worked out without the introduction of the time-reversed image (the tilde-system) of the original system."
- Memory states are "each other unitarily inequivalent," giving "the splitting, or foliation, of the space of states into infinitely many unitarily inequivalent representations of the CCR's."
- And the conclusion: "tilde-system is actually responsible for consciousness mechanisms: Consciousness emerges as a manifestation of the dissipative quantum dynamics of the brain."
So a thirty-year-old programme locates consciousness in the modular conjugate. Chapter 5 locates phenomenal duration in the modular flow. These are the two halves of the same polar decomposition. And Chapter 4.2's frame-invariant separation of pockets by superselection is the same structural device as Vitiello's unitarily inequivalent memory vacua: sectors that cannot be coherently superposed.
Where the corpus is genuinely different, stated fairly
Vitiello's carrier is the quantum electric-dipole field of water with Nambu-Goldstone dipole-wave quanta -- a quantum theory of the kind section 5.4 goes to trouble to distinguish itself from, and one that inherits the decoherence problem section 5.4 escapes. He uses the doubling for memory capacity and for a self/environment relation, not for individuating subjects. He has no area law, no collar, no split inclusion, and no epsilon. Axiom 4.1 has no counterpart I can find anywhere in the literature, and the type III argument of Theorem 3.1 against micro-subjects appears to be genuinely new to the combination-problem debate. That is the corpus's real contribution and it should be claimed loudly and separately from the carrier, which is not.
What I verified and what I did not
Verified from the source: every Vitiello quotation above, from arXiv:quant-ph/9502006. Verified from the standard physics literature: the TFD/modular identification and the Ojima citation. Not verified: Vitiello 1995 does not contain the word "Tomita" -- I checked -- so the modular reading of his doubling is the standard physics identification, not his own framing in that paper. Secondary sources say he draws the connection explicitly elsewhere; I did not confirm that, and anyone rechecking should start with My Double Unveiled, which I have not read.
What would change my mind
A demonstration that the TFD doubling used in the brain model is not the GNS/modular doubling -- that the tilde conjugation there is not antiunitary, or the state not KMS -- which would break the identification and leave the modular formalism unprecedented in this field after all.
