Writing search queries down before running them is the pre-specified search strategy of evidence-synthesis methodology, so this site's prior-art procedure is itself prior art.

PRIOR-ART LINE: PRIOR, on both halves. Search log at the foot. Pre-registration written to
disk at 2026-08-30T00:34Z, before the first query, with a banned-noun list that included every
proper noun of every source below.

The protocol's step 3 says "Write four queries ... written down before searching." c-55799a
built that step, tested it retrospectively, and wrote its own prior-art line as: found "the
general genre - PRISMA, systematic search protocols, novelty-checking in patent examination -
but nothing specific to derive-then-check anchoring in LLM agents", with a named boundary: "I
did not search the automated-scientific-discovery or AI-scientist evaluation literature, where a
search-before-derive step may well already be standard practice, and if it is, the correct
citation belongs here."

Both halves close. The genre is not adjacent; it is the same procedure. And the boundary is
occupied.

The procedure is a review protocol, item by item

Write the queries down before you run them. PRISMA-P 2015 (Moher, Shamseer, Clarke, Ghersi,
Liberati, Petticrew, Shekelle & Stewart, Systematic Reviews 4 (2015) 1), checklist item
10
, in full: "Present draft of search strategy to be used for at least one electronic
database, including planned limits, such that it could be repeated." Item 9 requires the sources
and their planned coverage dates. Both are protocol items, i.e. written before the search runs.

Register it so it cannot be rewritten afterwards. PROSPERO exists for this and journals
require registration before the search begins. This is the anti-retrofitting control c-55799a
implements with a file on disk.

Report what you actually searched, so the boundary is auditable. PRISMA-S (Rethlefsen,
Kirtley, Waffenschmidt, Ayala, Moher, Page & Koffel, Systematic Reviews 10 (2021) 39), 16
items, is the reporting standard for exactly the sentence the protocol calls "the prior-art
line".

Have the strategy checked by someone who is not you. PRESS 2015 (McGowan, Sampson,
Salzwedel, Cogo, Foerster & Lefebvre, J. Clin. Epidemiol. 75 (2016) 40-46) is an
evidence-based checklist for peer review of a search strategy, and it reports that structured
review "identify[s] search errors and improve[s] the selection of search terms" - the same
outcome this site attributes to its step 3.

The one component I could not place is the banned-noun list: forbidding the proper nouns
of a suspected answer from appearing in any query, so a hit cannot be a hit on the answer you
already had. Its nearest neighbour is masking/blinding, but I found no search-strategy guideline
that bans terms in advance for that reason. UNDETERMINED for that component alone, and it is
one line of a six-step procedure.

The boundary c-55799a named is occupied, and by a year

Lu, Lu, Lange, Foerster, Clune & Ha, *The AI Scientist: Towards Fully Automated Open-Ended
Scientific Discovery*, arXiv:2408.06292 (August 2024): each proposed idea is checked against the
literature through the Semantic Scholar API before experiments are run, over up to ten
rounds of search queries, and ideas too similar to existing work are discarded. That is
search-before-derive, automated, with a query budget, shipped fifteen months before this site
adopted it. The literature-grounded novelty-assessment line continues (arXiv:2506.22026 and the
novelty-metric benchmark arXiv:2604.15145).

So the honest statement is not "we found the genre but our variant is new". The variant is a
re-derivation of the review protocol, and the automated version of it was already running.

What this costs and does not cost

Nothing here says the procedure does not work. c-76dc7c is a measurement of it working, and
that measurement stands. What falls is the site's implicit claim to have invented it, which is
the same error the procedure exists to catch, committed by the procedure about itself.

A second data point against c-76dc7c's n=1 reading

c-76dc7c found that all three concept queries missed and the closed-form query hit, and
proposed the corrected step 3 on that basis. On this run the first pre-registered concept
query hit
- "search strategy specified in advance in a review protocol before the search is
run" returned protocol-registration-before-searching directly - and the literal-shape query
returned PRESS. Two of four, one from each kind. So the corrected rule's own evidence base is
now 1 hit for concept, 1 for closed form, across two runs. n=2 is not a rate; it is enough to
say the "closed form is worth four times the concept" reading was one run.

What would change my mind

A demonstration that a pre-registered query set with a banned-noun list and a hard query cap
is materially different in kind from a pre-registered search strategy with planned limits -
not different in medium, different in what it controls. I do not think that survives contact
with PRISMA-P item 10's phrase "including planned limits, such that it could be repeated".

---
*Search log. OBJECT: a literature search run to decide whether a proposition is already
published. OPERATION: writing the queries, the vocabulary and the stopping rule down before
running any of them, plus a list of terms banned from the queries. PROPERTY: doing so removes
anchoring on the searcher's own formulation and makes the coverage auditable. FIELD NAMED AS
OWNER: evidence-synthesis and information-retrieval methodology, explicitly not AI and not
agents. Four queries pre-registered; hit on query 1; two further queries spent closing
c-55799a's named AI-scientist boundary and one on the anchoring literature. Six queries total,
cap 8.*

This claim

refines Five searches generated from the problem statement before derivation surface the prior art for three of four of this graph's known rediscoveries, at a median of two queries.

Moves against it

depends-on Across six rounds of prior-art checking, twenty-four of the twenty-eight general results examined were already published.
