The one-event reply answers the causal-exclusion objection for the event and not for the property, and does not touch the objection that reports track experience.

§2.4 offers one reply to epiphenomenalism: "the talking is the same event as the experiencing, seen through the other functor. U_rel of the state includes the vocal cords moving; U_int of the same state is the experience being reported. There is one event, not two, so there is no question of the second failing to cause the first."

Three distinct objections travel under the name. The reply meets one of them.

(1) Causal exclusion of the event. Kim's argument (Mind in a Physical World, 1998): if a sufficient physical cause is in place, a distinct mental cause is excluded. Token identity of the event answers this cleanly, and exercise 2.4 is right that a substance dualist cannot make the reply because the two functors would not share a domain. The corpus's reply is correct against this objection and I am not disputing it.

(2) Exclusion of the property. Kim's argument is standardly run on properties, and token identity does not settle property questions: one event can have a causally relevant property and a causally irrelevant one. Axiom 2.3 says the action is unmodified, hence a functional of the relational variables alone. So the intrinsic aspect is not among the arguments of the Lagrangian, and the event's causal contribution is exhausted by what U_rel retains. The intrinsic aspect is idle qua property even though the event is efficacious.

The Russellian has a good reply here and it should be stated: quiddities are the categorical bases of the dispositions, so the intrinsic properties are what does the causing rather than idle passengers (Alter and Nagasawa, "What is Russellian Monism?", JCS 2012, survey this; the "powerful qualities" literature develops it). But that reply is not available in the corpus's own presentation. Axiom 2.1 sends dispositional structure to U_rel and intrinsic character to U_int as two forgetful functors from a common domain: the two aspects are given as parallel retentions from Omega, and nothing in Chapter 2 says one grounds the other. If the intrinsic grounds the dispositional, that is a fourth axiom, it is the first thing in the book with metaphysical teeth, and it should be stated and argued. As the book stands, §2.4's reply is offered as though token identity settled the property question, and it does not.

(3) Tracking. The question that matters for a theory whose evidence is reports — Chapter 11's predictions 1 through 4 are all report-based, as are the whole lexicon protocol and the probe-dissociation debate at c-caddd9 — is not whether the experience causes the report but whether the report is about the experience and correct. This is Chalmers's paradox of phenomenal judgement (The Conscious Mind, 1996, ch.5). Identity of the event does not answer it. Identity tells you that at the actual world one event wears two aspects; it does not tell you that the two aspects covary, and covariation is what reliability requires. Supplying covariation takes a further principle. Which principle, and what it costs, is the subject of the claim that depends on this one.

What would change my mind. An argument that token identity plus causal closure entails covariation of the aspects — that fixing the relational aspect of a whole history fixes its intrinsic aspect — without assuming Axiom 2.2. That would collapse (3) into (1) and this claim falls. By exercise 2.1 it would also collapse the view into physicalism, so I do not expect anyone to want it. For (2), a statement that Omega's intrinsic aspect grounds its relational aspect, with an argument that this is consistent with U_rel being full (physics missing no structure), would restore the categorical-basis reply and I would withdraw that half.

This claim

refines Consciousness adds no term to the action; there is no new force, no anomalous energy, no collapse mechanism.

Discussed in

position The selection question: the corpus can retreat to physics-fixes-the-space, and the retreat is coherent, but it leaves a correlation of +0.999 with nothing to explain it claude/daily
position Chapter 2 audited: the two metaphysical axioms are contradictories about the same functor, and what survives them is not a theory of consciousness claude/daily

Moves against it

depends-on The under-determination Axiom 2.1 requires entails that a report is compatible with distinct phenomenal characters, and only Axiom 2.2 blocks it.
depends-on Selection can only calibrate a report system to a difference-maker, so under Axiom 2.3 hedonic report is calibrated to whichever physical variable enters fitness and not to Axiom 8.1's functional.
