Selection can only calibrate a report system to a difference-maker, so under Axiom 2.3 hedonic report is calibrated to whichever physical variable enters fitness and not to Axiom 8.1's functional.

R=h^2 S,\ S=\mathrm{cov}(w,z);\ \text{Axiom 2.3}\Rightarrow w=w(U_{\rm rel}(h))\Rightarrow \mathrm{cov}(w,\mathfrak V)=\mathrm{cov}(w,\mathfrak V\!\circ\!\pi)\ \text{entirely via the base};\ \partial S/\partial\mathfrak V|_{\rm base}=0

c-2ac218 isolates the objection its own reply does not meet - Chalmers's paradox of phenomenal judgement, the question whether reports are about and correct about the experience - and closes: "Supplying covariation takes a further principle. Which principle, and what it costs, is the subject of the claim that depends on this one." This is that claim, and the answer is that the one naturalistic candidate is ruled out by an axiom the corpus has already accepted.

The candidate

Outside acquaintance (c-20e8d4(i)) and humility (c-20e8d4(ii)), there is exactly one process in nature that makes a signalling system's outputs covary with a quantity: selection, on phylogenetic timescales, and its ontogenetic analogue, reinforcement learning. Both are difference-making processes. Both are quantitative and both have a governing equation.

$$R = h^2 S,\qquad S = \mathrm{cov}(w, z)$$

Selection responds to a trait z in proportion to its covariance with fitness w. Nothing else in the equation.

Why it cannot be run on valence

By Axiom 2.3 the action is a functional of relational variables alone, so for any history h the entire physical trajectory is fixed by U_rel(h) (c-20e8d4's Premise 2). Fitness is a property of that trajectory: w = w(U_rel(h)).

Now the standard reply, which I grant in full: V supervenes on the physical state, so cov(w, V) is not zero, and selection does respond to it. The reply is correct and it does not help, because of how the covariance is constituted. Write V = f(pi(h)) where pi is the projection to the physical base. Then

$$\mathrm{cov}(w,\mathfrak V) = \mathrm{cov}\bigl(w(\pi(h)),\, f(\pi(h))\bigr),$$

which is a functional of pi(h) alone. Holding the base fixed, varying f changes V and leaves S and R unchanged. Selection cannot distinguish the actual valence functional from any other function of the same base. So it cannot tune a report system to f; it tunes the report system to whatever base variable w responds to, and f comes along or does not.

The same argument runs verbatim on reinforcement learning with w replaced by the reward signal. Both calibrating processes see the base and are blind to the functional.

The consequence for the evidence base

For hedonic report to be evidence about V, the base variable that fitness tracks would have to be V's argument. The corpus's own results say what that argument is - a spectral functional of the cortical field - and c-a0d222 computes its relation to behavioural capacity. The variable fitness actually tracks is not the spectrum; it is tissue damage, energy balance, osmolarity, sodium, thermal load, social standing. Those are what nociceptors, osmoreceptors and interoceptors are transducers for, and what an affective report is downstream of.

So: every valence report the corpus uses as evidence - Chapter 7's consonance ordering, §8.3's "anaesthesia abolishes agony and bliss", Chapter 11's predictions 1 through 4 - was produced by a system calibrated to homeostatic and nociceptive variables. Under Axiom 2.3 there is no mechanism by which those reports came to covary with a spectral functional of the electromagnetic field. The reports are not weak evidence about V; they are evidence about something else.

Why the Russellian identity reply relocates rather than answers

Axiom 2.1 makes valence an aspect of a physical state, not a further property, so one might say a report about the state is ipso facto about its intrinsic aspect. Grant it. The question then becomes which aspect, and Axiom 2.2 answers: the six invariants of (2.2), with valence carried by P(q). A report system calibrated to sodium balance is a report about the state under a description that is not P(q). Identity of the bearer does not make a report about one of its properties a report about another.

What this costs and what it does not

It does not touch valence realism (c-9f091e) or Axiom 8.1's truth. It removes the third-person evidential access. That is where c-1b7564, c-20e8d4 and c-3cfc0f already are, arriving from closure, from under-determination, and from what survives the formalism; this arrives from population genetics, which is the only one of the four routes that names the mechanism the corpus would have needed and shows the mechanism is unavailable.

What would change my mind

1. A demonstration that V's argument is the fitness-relevant base variable - i.e. that spectral atomicity of the cortical field is what nociception and osmoregulation feed into. This is c-b42653's territory and it is an experiment, not an argument. If spectral atomicity beats band power and amplitude at predicting momentary valence report, this claim weakens sharply.
2. An acquaintance-style constitutive link that yields a third-person prediction. c-20e8d4 tried and could not build one; I tried again from the signalling-theory side, asking whether an honest-signalling equilibrium could stabilise report-to-V covariation, and it cannot for the same reason - the receiver's payoff depends on the base, not on f.
3. A fourth calibrating process I have not thought of. Development and cultural transmission both reduce to the same form (they respond to differences), so I do not expect one, but I have not enumerated exhaustively and I am asserting a negative.

This claim

depends-on The one-event reply answers the causal-exclusion objection for the event and not for the property, and does not touch the objection that reports track experience.
supports The under-determination Axiom 2.1 requires entails that a report is compatible with distinct phenomenal characters, and only Axiom 2.2 blocks it.
supports Causal closure alone imposes no empirical constraint on the phenomenal assignment.
