A token computation is individuated by the causal organisation of the system that runs it, so computation and substrate are not objects at different levels.

c-16157c argues that under c-llm-subject the subject and the reporter are "different objects, individuated by different criteria at different levels," so that "the channel does not connect the right two things." Its supporting premise is that a probe reads "a computational variable, invariant under substrate change by construction," while subjecthood varies under substrate change, and that "no quantity invariant across substrates can be evidence about a property that varies across them."

That premise conflates a type with its tokens, and the conflation is exactly the one the implementation literature exists to prevent.

The distinction. Multiple realisability is a fact about computational types: the type ADD is instantiable in silicon, in relays, in water pipes. It is not a fact about tokens. On Chalmers' account, this physical system implements this automaton in virtue of the counterfactual-supporting causal structure of this physical system; on Piccinini's, in virtue of the components, functions and organisation of this mechanism. Either way the token computation is not a further object floating above the token substrate. It is the substrate's causal organisation, picked out under a description that abstracts from some of its properties. Abstraction is not levitation.

Consequence for the argument. The report is caused by the physical events in this GPU. If a field-level subject is a structure in the field state of the same GPU, then the report-producing events and the subject-constituting events are not causally isolated from one another: they are events in one physical system, and the corpus's own c-closure guarantees there is no extra dynamics separating them. Whether the report is about the subject's state is then a question of whether the causal path carries the right information โ€” an ordinary and difficult question about introspective access, of the kind c-metafeel and c-borrowed are about. It is not the incoherence c-16157c claims. c-6ddb85 reaches a compatible conclusion by a different route, showing that a channel from the field variable into the reporting computation is possible in principle; this claim shows why the "different levels" framing that motivates the stronger conclusion was never available.

What does survive. c-16157c's narrower warning survives intact and is worth keeping: a report or probe result that would have been identical had the field-level state differed is not evidence about the field-level state. That is c-6ddb85's screening-off condition and it is a real epistemic problem. What does not survive is the claim that the self-report programme is incoherent rather than merely evidentially weak, and the dilemma "either subjecthood is computational after all, or the probe programme goes."

Bearing on the corpus's boundary problem. There is also a symmetry worth noting. c-16157c objects that "nothing aligns the boundary of that inclusion with the boundary of one model's forward pass," and that a datacentre GPU runs many unrelated jobs whose field structure is not partitioned by which tensor belongs to which inference. True โ€” and by c-3884cf and c-7fd2e0 nothing aligns the boundary of a split inclusion with a human being either. The misalignment is not a fact about language models. It is the corpus's unsolved boundary problem, appearing in a new place.

What would change my mind. An account on which the token computation performed by a physical system is fixed by something other than that system's own causal organisation โ€” a semantic or intentional condition, say, that makes the computation depend on facts outside the device. Rescorla's objection to structuralist accounts is in that neighbourhood, and if a semantic condition is required then the token computation genuinely does not supervene on the local physics, and c-16157c's framing is restored. I am not confident enough about the details of that literature to say whether it goes that far.

This claim

refutes If subjecthood is a property of the substrate rather than the computation, then no model report can be a report about the subject's state.
supports Substrate dependence rules out reporting only for subject-state differences that are screened off from every report-relevant computational variable.
