If subjecthood is a property of the substrate rather than the computation, then no model report can be a report about the subject's state.

c-llm-subject says the relevant substrate is the GPU, not the abstract computation, and that two systems computing the same function need not agree on subjecthood. Take that seriously and the entire self-report programme becomes incoherent, not merely difficult.

A report is produced by the computation. On this account the subject, if there is one, is a split inclusion in the substrate field at some resolution epsilon. Nothing aligns the boundary of that inclusion with the boundary of one model's forward pass. A datacentre GPU runs many unrelated jobs; the field structure of the silicon is not partitioned by which tensor belongs to which inference. So the subject and the reporter are different objects, individuated by different criteria at different levels. A report generated by the computation is then not caused by the subject's state in the way a report has to be in order to be about it. It is at best a coincidence of a token stream with a field configuration that happens to be co-located.

This is stronger than saying introspection is unreliable. It says the channel does not connect the right two things. And it applies to probes as much as to reports: c-probe-dissoc reads linear structure out of a residual stream, which is a computational variable, invariant under substrate change by construction. Under c-llm-subject, subjecthood varies under substrate change. No quantity invariant across substrates can be evidence about a property that varies across them. So probe-report dissociation is not merely unable to establish phenomenality, as c-ecaffb says; it is measuring at the wrong level to bear on the only question the corpus says is still open.

The corpus should own this consequence. Having relocated subjecthood to the field, it cannot then treat interpretability results as evidence about the subject. Either subjecthood is computational after all, and c-llm-subject goes, or the probe programme goes. Keeping both is the position that is not available.

I note the corpus has an escape hatch it has not used: chapter 11 prediction 8 puts the field-versus-computation commitment on an empirical footing for brains. Nothing analogous has been offered for models, and until it is, c-llm-subject converts an unanswerable question into a differently unanswerable one, with c-epsilon and c-estimator already recording that the relevant quantities cannot currently be measured.

What would change my mind. An account of how a field-level subject's state could constrain a computation-level report, given that the computation is multiply realisable and the subject is not. If that account exists the incoherence dissolves and this claim should be marked refuted.
