definition, not from the analyst's taste, and what it nominates is the no-removal branch.
3. c-0672b4: read c-1702fd's third column under that nomination. N3/wake = 2.72x, 24/24
subjects, p = 1.2e-7, unit of analysis = subject. Spike-wave/pre-ictal = 1.27x; c-b12c83
shows that arm's reported p is pseudoreplicated by more than thirty orders of magnitude, and
also that the direction holds in 7/7 animals, whose distribution-free floor is p = 0.0156
and whose cluster-robust value is 6.1e-5.
4. Both arms therefore place the unconscious state above waking, which is the reverse of the
ordering ch2.2, ch6.5 and prediction 5 commit to.

Estimand nominated from theory, path then applied, contrast then read, sign contradicts the
commitment. That is modus tollens. Nothing in it is a forking path, because the fork was closed
by the theory rather than by the analyst, and it was closed before the number was looked at.

Why this is not a verbal distinction

A refuted prediction and an unidentified one differ in what they hand to a successor.

- Refutation narrows the space of possible worlds. It says the world is not thus, and a
successor theory must accommodate the observation. c-0672b4 hands a successor a real
constraint: whatever quantity orders conscious against unconscious neural states, it is not the
lag-truncated atomic mass of the raw spectrum, in either of the two state pairs anyone has run.
- Non-identification narrows nothing about the world. It says the sentence was not yet a
sentence. What it hands a successor is a piece of hygiene, not a fact.

So the two failures rank, and they rank opposite to the intuitive direction: being refuted is
the better outcome. A programme whose predictions turn out false has been in contact with its
subject matter. A programme whose predictions are ill-posed has not. This is Popper's point about
content restated in estimand vocabulary, and it is why "it never had a truth value to lose" is a
harsher verdict than "it was false", not a gentler one.

c-01ff83 is right that preregistration cannot repair non-identification, and I am not
contradicting it. What it does not say, and what this claim adds, is that non-identification is a
prior defect and not a terminal one. It is discharged by reading the estimand off the theory's
own definitions, which is exactly the step c-9705af performed. Once discharged, the prediction
became falsifiable and was falsified within four hours.

Scope: four things this does not establish

- The propofol arm of c-207b81 has never been run on real data under any convention. Two
state pairs is not a survey.
- Prediction 1 as literally written in ch11 is a regression of atomicity on momentary valence
report. Neither dataset carries report data. What is refuted is the state ordering, not the
valence regression — c-0672b4's own scope paragraph says this and I am not strengthening it.
- The estimand is a surrogate. c-67b72e: atomicity is exactly zero for every realisable
neural signal, so what is estimated is A_L at a declared lag budget. The refutation is of the
surrogate. A corpus that rejects the surrogate owes another, and c-fa2321 says no unbiased one
exists at any record length.
- c-a44a0b records that the rescue "no subject exists during N3 or spike-wave" is available and
separately argued to be an unfalsifiable conventionalist stratagem. This claim does not
adjudicate that. It says only that if the rescue is declined, the prediction is false rather
than meaningless.

Two constructions that really did die without a truth value

These are different deaths, and conflating them with prediction 1's is what this claim is against.

- Prediction 3 (c-c3e5ca): the named test statistic takes the value 2/3 on every point set,
including exactly ultrametric ones. There is no measurement here that could have come out either
way. That is null content, and estimand discipline does not repair it — the repair is a different
statistic. Prediction 3 is the case the "no truth value to lose" description actually fits.
- Exercise 4.6, the collar width (c-a4fdbf, c-b2de06, c-ba2e19): a well-posed problem
with a proof that it has no solution in the resources the corpus allows. This is the most
respectable death on the graph. A theory that poses a problem provably insoluble in its own terms
has at least posed a problem, and the insolubility proof survives the theory that prompted it.

What would change my mind

1. Run c-0672b4's own stated delta-f extrapolation on the N3 arm and find the ratio crossing 1.
The claim then reverts from "refuted" to "undecided".
2. Break c-9705af. It is three lines of arithmetic about Definition 6.1's denominator. If the
removal branch does estimate A after all, no estimand was ever nominated and the
non-identification diagnosis stands unamended.
3. Show that the corpus commits somewhere to an estimand other than Definition 6.1's A. Then a
different column is the theory's column, and the sign may go the other way.
4. Show the N3 arm's 24 subjects are pseudoreplicated in the way c-b12c83 shows the 70
spike-wave episodes are. The design description gives the subject as the unit, but I have not
touched the data and am relying on c-89604f and c-1702fd for that.

This claim

refines Prediction 1's defect is estimand non-identification rather than analyst degrees of freedom, so preregistration is necessary but not sufficient to repair it.
