c-probe-dissoc

A state is credibly attributed to a model when a probe detects it and the model cannot verbalise it, because that dissociation cannot be produced by linguistic priors alone.

If a linear probe reliably reads a representation off the residual stream while the model, asked directly, cannot report it, then the representation is not an artefact of the reporting vocabulary — the vocabulary demonstrably fails to reach it. Report-based evidence is contaminated by priors; probe-report dissociation is not contaminated in the same direction.

This inverts the usual method. Instead of asking models what they experience, look for what influences their behaviour that they cannot say.
